It’s time to return to the fictional Caribbean island of Saint-Marie for another series of Death in Paradise mysteries. I was late in discovering the show and have been binge-watching it, writing these posts as I go.
In my previous post about the show I covered the third series which brought about the first changes to the show’s regular cast. This fourth series features some further changes with two departures and two additions.
Sergeant Best is the first to depart but, to my frustration, this has happened off screen in the gap between series three and four. Having invested in and liked the character it is a shame that he didn’t get a proper farewell.
I was a little better prepared for the second departure of the series as Camille is written out. While it is still pretty abrupt given that earlier episodes in the season were still playing with the possibility of a romance with Goodman, this is at least handled throughout the course of the story and the moment of departure feels satisfying, providing some closure.
Happily I liked both of the additions a lot, feeling that they both brought something new to the show. Joséphine Jobert is charming as DS Florence Cassell, establishing quite a different relationship with DI Goodman than her predecessor that focuses more on her professional skills than their interpersonal relationship. That being said, there are some nice moments between the pair that suggest strong mutual respect developing by the end of this series.
Officer J. P. Hooper is youthful and enthusiastic while adding a serious streak that makes him a solid foil for Dwayne. He gets quite a lot to do here and does grow a little over the series.
In terms of the cases I think that this raised the standard from the previous series. Several cases presenting interesting problems to solve, Swimming in Murder defeating me completely. Even the weaker cases possess interesting subplots and guest performances making for a consistently entertaining run of episodes.
This continues my series of posts I started recently about the mystery series Death in Paradise. This time we are moving onto the show’s second series which retained the core cast from the first though it is clear that there was a slight tweaking of the tone with several of the stories here containing darker elements.
While there were not many contenders for my eventual Top 5 Death in Paradise episodes among the stories from this series, I felt that the average standard was higher than in the series before. Only A Deadly Curse struck me as dull.
Other stories in the season are far stronger, particularly A Dash of Sunshine which combines excellent sleuthing with the entertaining dynamics.
Next time I’ll take a look at the third series which sees the first of many changes to the Honoré Police Station roster.
Almost all of the posts on this blog are about mystery novels and short story collections but there are times I like to branch out a little. Death in Paradise has been on the air since 2011 and is something of a locked room fan’s dream. Most of the episodes feature either a locked room or impossible murder, all set against the backdrop of the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie.
The first I heard about the show was when it was announced that Kris Marshall was leaving and people were speculating that he might be the new Doctor Who but I only started watching it after reading some posts from Puzzle Doctor about the show and discovering that it was available here through Netflix.
This first season starred Ben Miller as DI Poole, an English Police Detective who is assigned to the island to investigate the murder of his predecessor. His team takes an episode to settle into place, eventually comprising DS Camille Bordey (Sara Martins), Officer Fidel Best (Gary Carr) and Officer Dwayne Myers (Danny John-Jules). Élizabeth Bourgine appears as Camile’s mother Catherine and Don Warrington makes several appearances as Commissioner Patterson (though not nearly enough for my tastes – he is one of the best things about the show).
The first episode of the show essentially establishes the concept and DI Poole as a lead character, focusing on his discomfort in his new surroundings. Later episodes continue to explore his awkwardness but within the context of the broader dynamics of his team. These interpersonal relationships are the source of many of the comedic elements found within the show and much of its charm. Even the weaker stories within the season get a lift from this sort of banter though happily the standard of the stories in this season is pretty high.
Highlights from this season include Predicting Murder, Spot the Difference and Music of Murder. The first of those stories features a woman prophesying her own death in a voodoo ceremony at the hands of a scarred man before being found dead the following day in her (scarred) ex son-in-law’s classroom. Spot the Difference has the wonderful premise that a man is murdered while handcuffed to DI Poole while Music of Murder features a musician being murdered while he is lying inside a coffin.
There are only a few stories that struck me as being disappointing. The impossibility in Wicked Wedding Night collapses too easily and I felt DI Poole acts a little out-of-character in Missing a Body? although I did enjoy his banter with Camille in that story. Both of those stories are still quite entertaining in spite of the issues I had with them.
Overall I felt that the show had a strong and fairly consistent first series. The storylines were fun and creative and I really enjoyed the interactions of the cast although I was left wanting a little more for Dwayne and Fidel to do (I do think that subsequent seasons give the rest of the team more to do).
A Meditation on Murder is the first of the tie-in novels for Death in Paradise, a mystery television show set on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint-Marie. While this show has been running for several years I only tried it for the first time a few months ago after reading some discussions about the most recent seasons on various GAD and impossible crime blogs.
I held off on reading the novels until I was safely out of the DI Poole era out of a misplaced concern that they might spoil something on the show. As it happens I need not have worried about that – this is set early enough that there is no major continuity points to spoil. Indeed I think that the book can be enjoyed even if you have never seen an episode of the show.
A Meditation on Murder begins by introducing us to Aslan Kennedy who is part of a husband and wife team that run a spiritual retreat on the island. In addition to offering yoga instruction, Aslan hosts small private group meditation sessions in a Japanese-style paper teahouse. He selects the guests who will be invited and locks the building from the inside to ensure that they are not disturbed.
One of these sessions is in progress when a loud screaming is heard coming from inside the building. His wife and the handyman cut open one of the walls to find Julia, a part-time employee at the hotel, standing over the body holding a bloody knife. When questioned she says that she must have killed Aslan though she does not remember how she did it or why. More confusing still, the wounds seem to have been made by a right-hander while she is left-handed.
There are several mysteries that the reader will need to consider. Firstly, what motives would anyone have to want Aslan dead? Initially it seems no one has anything bad to say about him and several of the attendees are recent arrivals to the retreat, meeting him for the first time. Of course this is a murder mystery novel and so before long it will turn out that everyone had some reason to want him dead. I enjoyed discovering what those reasons were and I think does a good job of making them seem credible.
Secondly, how was the murder weapon brought into the teahouse and, thirdly, how was the murder achieved? These mysteries were both technical in nature and I admit that I was a little concerned that I had spotted how it was worked in some of the earliest chapters in the book. Instead I found the method used to be much more clever and inventive than I had guessed while playing fairly with the reader.
It is an intriguing case and I appreciated that there are several points in which we discover that things are more complex than they initially seem. As the book progresses further questions are raised that we have to solve and I did appreciate that rather than being a baffling case that proves simple, this is structured as an apparently simple case that is far more complex than it seems. This is unusual for the show but I think it works here because of the additional opportunities for character exploration and development that the novel form offers.
Thorogood does an excellent job of translating the tone and key elements of the television show’s first few series into prose. Each of the characters are instantly recognizable and feel consistent with how they are depicted in the show and I think the humorous banter between the stiff and uncomfortable Poole and members of his team works as well on the page as it does performed.
The only aspect of the transition to the page that is not entirely successful is the pacing of the adventure. At several points in the novel we are presented with a visual reproduction of Poole’s suspect board and recaps of some key pieces of evidence that seems redundant. They can be easily skipped but they do slow the story down quite a bit and repeat themselves. Hopefully some of the later novels tone this down or remove this device completely as this continual revision of the facts is less necessary in print than on-screen.
Thorogood does find some benefits to this longer form however, producing a wonderful b-plot in which Poole contemplates ridding himself of Harry the Lizard. This relies on us experiencing Poole’s thought processes in a way that would have felt awkward if attempted on-screen and provides some very funny moments as he carefully plans a lizard murder (a lacertacide?).
The only other negative I can think of with this is that Dwayne and Fidel are not given much to do in the story with the bulk of the action given to Poole and Camille Bordey. They are not completely absent from the story though and I will say that this was a complaint I often had with the first few series of the television show as well so it is not an issue specific to this book.
All in all, I think A Meditation on Murder is an excellent, light read that manages to reproduce all of the key elements from the television show itself. If you are already a fan then it is a chance to revisit the show’s first lineup and reacquaint yourself with DI Poole while if you are a newcomer you can still enjoy it as a really ingenious puzzle mystery. Recommended!
